What materials can I use to build my extension/self build?
If you are looking to add an extension to your property or even build your dream home from scratch, there are a number of different materials you can use, each with its own characteristics and considerations.
The most popular choice when it comes to building an extension, or self build, is brick and block as it is the most traditional form of construction. This method of building involves using bricks for the external walls and blocks for the internal walls. Whilst it offers durability, strength, and good insulation properties, brick and block can be time-consuming and can be labour intensive.
Next we have the Timber frame method. Timber frame construction involves using a structural framework of timber posts and beams to support the walls, floors, and roof. This method is usually much faster than the brick and block method, more sustainable for the environment and can increase usuable floor space, as the wall thickness is generally much slimmer. This build also has good insulation properties, however additional treatment may be required to improve fire resistance.
Another way that you can build your extension/self build is to used SIPs. Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) is a form of build which are pre fabricated boards which are lightweight and can be easily assembled, resulting in reduced construction time. SIPs are also very energy efficient and they provide good structural strength but may require additional support for large extensions.
There are many other different materials which you can construct your new extension, or self build, such as glass and aluminum, steel frame and concrete. We would always recommend researching the various options and talk to professionals, such as ourselves, before deciding on the method in which you will build.
